How it works

The Varian 2100CD offers photon energy configurations of 6 MV and up to 10, 15, 18, or 25 MV depending on the variant. For photon mode, the maximum dose rate is 600 monitor units per minute. Electron beam energies are also available with a maximum dose rate of 1000 monitor units per minute.[1]

The Varian 2100CD can be equipped with either an 80-leaf multi-leaf collimator (MLC) covering a maximum field size of 40 by 40 centimeters, or a 120-leaf MLC of the same field size. The 120-leaf version uses 5-millimeter leaf width in the central 20 centimeters and 10-millimeter width in the outer 20 centimeters. An optional on-board imager (OBI) enables kV imaging and cone-beam CT for image-guided radiation therapy.[1]

Where it fits in the process flow

The Varian 2100CD supports 3D conformal radiation therapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Optional capabilities include stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) when fitted with cones or a micro-MLC. Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is available only if the optional OBI system is installed.[1]

Applications

With its optional stereotactic radiosurgery capability, the Varian 2100CD can deliver highly focused radiation to small intracranial lesions using cones or a micro-MLC. The optional OBI system enables image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) by acquiring kV X-ray images or cone-beam CT scans immediately before or during treatment.[1]
